About Cambridge

Cambridge, Massachusetts is a city of approximately 100,000 residents located just across the Charles River from Boston proper.  Perhaps best known as the home of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge is also considered one of the premier cities in the U.S. for biotech and tech companies.

Founded in 1630 by the Puritans, it was originally known as “New Towne”, although that name would change soon after the founding of Harvard University in 1636.  Renamed Cambridge in 1638—in honor of Cambridge, England where the alma mater of the Harvard founders were educated—Cambridge soon became known as an intellectual  and education center of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.  During the American Revolution, General Washington used a home (later occupied by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow) on Brattle Street as his command center during the battle of Boston.

Over the next 200 years, Cambridge became world famous as both an industrial center (for glass, ice and brick) as well as for the intellectual and artistic achievements of its residents.  Poet e.e. cummings, writer Octavio Paz, and psychologist William James all called the city home—as did the famed American culinary pioneer Julia Child.  However, Cambridge is also an extremely diverse community and has a large and vibrant immigrant community.

Geographically, the city is divided into “squares”, much like neighboring Somerville and Medford.  For the most part, these squares are neighborhood centers, offering shopping, dining, and access to public transportation.  The main squares of the city are Porter Square, Harvard Square, Central Square, and Kendall Square.  Each of these squares and the neighborhoods surrounding them are unique and have their own special flavor—from the mansions of Professor’s Row near Harvard to the brightly-colored side-by-side single family homes in  Cambridgeport.

Cambridge, like Boston, is often called a “walking city”, and for good reason.  It’s relatively small size, wide sidewalk and beautiful architecture (not to mention the heavy traffic!) often make walking a better—and faster—alternative to driving.  Bicycle riding is also a preferred method of getting around. Due to high population of students and its bike-friendly nature Cambridge has been voted one of the best cities for bicyclists.
