About Malden

Malden, Massachusetts is a city of approximately 55,000 located just outside of Boston on the north side the Mystic River.  Originally known as “Mistick Side”, Malden was once part of the Charlestown neighborhood of Boston.  Settled in 1640, it soon split off from Boston proper and was incorporated as a city in 1649.

Like many other cities and towns in the area, Malden is organized around “Squares”.  The squares serves as neighborhood and business centers, and many of Malden’s neighborhoods take their names from the neighborhoods they surround.  Some of these include Malden Square, Oak Grove Square, and Bellrock Square. Each of these squares has its own unique character and amenities—for instance, Bellrock Square is centered around beautiful Bellrock Park, and Oak Grove Square provides easy access to the T as well as playing host to many ethnic restaurants and local businesses.

Malden is also c situated in close proximity to metropolitan Boston's major arteries, and offers easy access to both the 128 tech belt and Boston proper. In addition to this, Logan Airport is only a short drive away, and the city has both T and commuter rail access.  Some of America's best universities and colleges—including Tufts University, are only a short car or train ride away, making Malden a premier commuter location.

Malden also boasts over 30 parks, which provide residents with easy access to tennis and basketball courts, playgrounds, and ball fields. Like other areas towns, the city borders part of the 2,500 acre Middlesex Fells Reservation, as well as part of Pine Banks Park.  Both of these conservation areas are open to the public year-round and offer many well-maintained hiking and biking trails. The city is also only minutes away from some of New England’s best beaches.

Over the last ten years, Malden has seen a great deal of gentrification as property values rose. Many home buyers—priced out of towns like Somerville, Melrose and Medford—looked to Malden as a desirable alternative.  This led to a wave of renovation and improvements, culminating in the ongoing revitalization of Malden’s downtown. At the same time, Malden has made a focused effort to preserve its “neighborhood” feel and traditions, successfully maintaining a desirable balance between city living and the familiar feel of a small town.
