About Medford
Located just a few miles from Boston proper, Medford offers a unique combination of urban and suburban neighborhoods, great schools, and easy access to parks, conservation land and public transportation. With a diverse population of approximately 58,000, Medford is perhaps best known as the home of Tufts University.
Founded in 1630, Medford is the fourth oldest English settlement in America. Originally the area that now makes up the town was owned as a private settlement, or “peculiar”. As the owners of the land began dividing their plots among their heirs, they realized there was a need for representation in the colonial government. However, it wasn’t until 1892 that Medford was officially incorporated as a city.
Like Somerville and Cambridge, Medford is made up of a number of “squares”, or neighborhood centers, as well as specific neighborhoods. Each offers its own combination of homes, business, and amenities, all of which tend to reflect the vibrant and diverse nature of the Medford community. Many of them, including Medford Square, and West Medford also offer easy access to major commuter routes and public transportation. In fact, one the most-cited reasons given for moving to Medford is the combination of easy access to Boston.
Many of Medford’s neighborhoods, especially West Medford and Lawrence Estates, are known for their beautiful Victorian and pre-WWI era homes. Many of these homes also have large yards, perfect for growing families—and despite mostly being situated on quiet, tree lined streets they are only minutes from the commuter rail and local shopping.
Medford is also one of the communities that border on the Middlesex Fells reservation, a pristine conservation area of about 5,000 acres. Many residents take full advantage of the many trails, and there is a large (unofficial) off-leash dog park located at the “Sheepfold”—a large, hilly meadow that is also used for sledding during the winter months.
Overall, Medford offers one of the best combinations of value, accessibility, and amenities of any community around Boston—and it’s home values have risen rapidly as more and more people realize this.
