About Melrose
Melrose is a small but diverse city located approximately 7 miles north of Boston. The city is just under 5 miles in total area, and with only 28,000 residents it offers a uniquely suburban while maintaining the vibrancy and innovative spirit of a growing community. Since its settlement in the 18th century, Melrose has always offered a desirable compromise between the urban environment of Boston, Cambridge and Somerville and the quiet of the suburbs.
Melrose’s neighborhoods are known throughout the metro Boston area for their beautiful (and surprisingly affordable) Victorian homes. In recent years, the city has seen a rapid rise in new homeowners, as young families have flocked to the city for it combination of great schools, tree lined streets, and family-friendly atmosphere. Like neighboring Medford, Melrose also has its own commuter rail stop as well as easy access to the T’s Orange Line, making it an ideal bedroom community for Boston.
Melrose is partially surrounded by the Middlesex Fells, a 2500+ acre reservation that residents use for hiking, mountain biking, running, sledding, and cross-country skiing. The Fells also contains two unused reservoirs (Bellevue Pond and Spot Pond) that can be used for canoeing or fishing. As well, there is a large (unofficial) off-leash dog park located at the Sheepfold entrance, just off one of the main access roads. Melrose also has a number of parks within the city limits, including Melrose Common, Pine Banks Park and Mount Hood Memorial Park.
The Melrose school system is considered to be one of the best in the state, with over 96% of graduates going on to college. The city is also home a vibrant and active arts community, the longest-running symphony orchestra in the country. Each year the city hosts the Melrose Arts festivals, as well as many dramatic productions at the city’s own Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall.
With its combination of beautiful homes, wide open spaces, great schools and easy access to the city, it’s easy to see why Boston Magazine recently rated Melrose as one the best places to buy a home.
