About Revere
The City of Revere located just north of Boston and borders Winthrop, East Boston and Chelsea to the South, Everett and Malden to the West, Saugus and Lynn to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the east. The total land area of the city of approximately 10 miles—but due to its proximity to the ocean and large areas of wetlands, only around 6 square miles is able to be used. The diverse population is approximately 55,000 and is made up of people from all over the world.
Revere’s first inhabitants were Native Americans who belonged to the Pawtucket Tribe and were known as the Rumney Marsh Indians. Rumney Marsh—as both Revere and neighboring Chelsea were originally known—was settled in 1630, making Revere one of the oldest settlements in the country. Originally part of Boston, it was soon split off into a separate town.
Like many other parts of metro Boston, Revere has its share of history: John Smith, Governor Winthrop and, of course Paul Revere visited the town. George Washington often visited the home of local farmer and merchant Isaac Pratt, and many men from Revere volunteered to fight for the Colonies. In addition, Revere played a major role in the American Revolution; it was the site of the first naval battle of the war in 1775 at Rumney Marsh.
The completion of the railroad line to Boston in 1875 signaled the beginning of rapid population growth for the town, as well as the development of the Beach as a summer resort. Over the years, Revere Beach developed into a major summer destination for families from all over New England. Some of the many attractions included Wonderland Park, one of the first amusement parks in the U.S., and in the early 1900’s Revere Beach become one of the first public beaches in the country.
The Beach began to deteriorate in the 1950s, and by the early 1970s had severely deteriorated. The "Great Blizzard of '78"' proved to be the final death knell for the "old" Revere Beach, as many of the remaining businesses, amusements, pavilions and sidewalks and much of the sea wall were all destroyed. Luckily, the Beach was revitalized during the 1980s and now boasts a beautiful sand beach, restored pavilions and a renovated boulevard.
This revitalization of Revere’s most famous landmark also proved to be a windfall for the city; over the last 10 years a number of luxury high-rise condominium buildings have been built or renovated along the beach. This led to a rapid increase in home values in the area as local residents took advantage of Revere’s public transportation, easy access to Logan Airport and stunning ocean views. It also caused a “ripple effect” in the area, with new businesses, music venues, and parks opening up to meet the needs of the rapidly changing community.
Today, Revere is considered a premier alternative to Boston, offering affordable housing, a highly diverse multi-cultural community, and fast, easy access to Boston via public transportation.
