About Saugus
Saugus, a community of approximately 26,000, is located northwest of Boston. Just under 12 square miles, it offers highly desirable compromise between to Boston and major highways and a quiet suburban atmosphere.
Saugus was first settled in 1629 and incorporated as a town in 1815. From the beginning, Saugus had a strong economic base; it was the home to the first iron works in the U.S. (now a National Historical Site) as well as being the birthplace of the nineteenth century ice industry. During the Industrial Revolution, Saugus became a center of industry; everything from shoes to wool to tobacco were made or processed here. Today, that economic base has expanded significantly. Route 1, a major commuter route connecting the North Shore and Boston, runs directly through the town, and the businesses along it provide millions of dollars of tax revenue for Saugus’ schools and local services.
However, much of Saugus consists of quiet, tree lined streets and suburban homes. During the 1940s, 50’s and 60’s, many residents from neighboring cities like Revere, Malden, Somerville and Medford were drawn to Saugus’ combination of great housing, quiet neighborhoods and local amenities. While a large number of these new arrivals were Irish, the vast majority were of Italian descent. Because of this, Saugus is sometimes referred to as the “suburban North End” or the “Little Italy” of the North Shore.
Saugus also has a number of local parks and conservation areas, including the beautiful 640 acre Breakheart Reservation. The reservation contains many miles of well-maintained hiking trails, as well as two fresh-water lakes and a rambling section of the Saugus River. Many of the trails provide stunning vistas of Boston, southern New Hampshire and central Massachusetts, and the swimming area at Pearce Lake is one of the few pristine fresh- water swimming spots north of Boston. Rumney Marsh, which also borders Revere, is a 600 acre salt marsh that offers boating, fishing, and hiking. Camp Nihan, a smaller reservation area, provides camping spaces for local residents and groups.
With its combination of quiet suburban streets, a thriving local business community, and easy access to Boston, it’s easy to understand why Saugus has become such a desirable place to live.
